PROGRAMS
Marriage Preparation programs provide an opportunity for engaged couples to
further explore their relationship to each other and to God, and to realize more
fully the beauty and sanctity of married love. The programs are neither a course
in Catholic doctrine nor a "how to" for the perfect marriage.
Each program involved discussion and reflection on the Sacramentality of
Marriage, Communication Skills, Married Sexuality, Finances and Family Values.
Marriage Preparation programs are led by married couples, who will facilitate
the program, share their experiences of marriage and answer questions. All
Marriage Preparation programs place a responsibility on the engaged couple to
respond to topics and develop their skills for a successful relationship.
Two types of programs are available in the Diocese of Lexington- group programs
and sponsor-couple programs. Both programs are parish-based and designed to meet
the needs of engaged couples from that parish. Engaged couples from other
parishes are welcome to attend any program provided that space is available.
Marriage Preparation in the Catholic Diocese of Lexington consist of three parts
or phases:
1. The engaged couple meets with a priest or deacon to select a date for the
wedding, complete any necessary paperwork and spend time talking about marriage
itself.
2. Completion of FOCCUS test or other premarital inventory,
3. Participation in a parish-based program of Marriage Preparation.
It is required that you:
-Notify your parish priest or deacon at least six months before the proposed
wedding date. Your priest or deacon will arrange an appointment with you at this
time to begin the process of Marriage Preparation.
-The wedding ceremony of two Catholics ordinarily takes place in a church. In
either an inter-faith or inter-church marriage the Bishop may permit the couple
to celebrate their wedding in another place of worship when a pastoral reason
exists.
- Preparation for marriage is the responsibility of the parish. Ordinarily, the
priest or deacon who will witness your marriage ceremony will oversee the
process of your preparation and assist you in choosing a program that will suit
your needs.
-Couples need to register for the desired Marriage Preparation Program as soon
as possible.
