The
Sacrament of Baptism, the first of the
three sacraments of initiation, is also
the first of the seven sacraments in
the Roman Catholic Church.
There
are two essentials to the rite of Baptism:
the pouring of water over the head of
the person to be baptized (or the immersion
of the person in water); and the words
"I baptize you in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
In the Catholic Church today, baptism
is most commonly administered to infants.
At
Baptism, your child is joyfully welcomed
into the Church and the parish of Saint
Peter with the promise to help you nurture
the faith of your child. We offer Baptism
Preparation classes to help you prepare
for your child's baptism.
Steps
for Baptism of a Child
- Register
for the required Baptism Preparation
Class.
Please call the parish office at
(859) 252-7551 to speak with the Director
of Faith Formation about registering
for a class. Click here
for the schedule of classes beginning
this Fall 2011.
*Please
note that you are not required to
complete this class if you have
taken it within the last 2 years.
- Choose
godparents for your child.
The godparents must be baptized Christians,
mature in the Christian faith, and
active in their faith tradition's
practices. At least one must be a
fully initiated and practicing Catholic
in good standing with his/her parish
of membership. Both godparents will
be required to provide the date and
place of their baptisms along with
the name and address of their current
church of membership. Godparents are
encouraged to attend the Baptism preparation
class.
- Schedule
the baptism.
Baptisms will be celebrated at St.
Peter Church during Sunday Mass. Click
here
for the schedule of baptisms from
Fall 2011-Summer 2012.
You
may choose either the 8:30 AM or
the 11:30 AM Mass. If there are
extraordinary circumstances, we
can assist you with other arrangements.
Adult
Baptism
Adult
converts to Catholicism will receive
the Sacrament of Baptism, unless they
have already received a Christian baptism
in another Christian tradition. While
an adult can be baptized after proper
instruction in the Faith, adult baptism
normally occurs as part of the Rite
of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)
and is immediately followed by the Sacraments
of Confirmation and First Communion.
If
you have questions about adult baptism
(RCIA), please call the parish office
at (859) 252-7551 to speak with the
Director of Faith Formation. You may
also click here
to learn more about RCIA.
